Revolution (live) + Incredible Women Play

Revolution always goes down well live. She packs so much energy into the song when she performs it. I wouldn't mind another banger like this sometime in the future - it sounds fantastic. Still, none of her performances have outdone the performance at Meribel. That was something else....

Sophie took part in a small 15-minute drama on BBC Radio 4 on June 1, 2012. In this story, reporter Jeremy Front spends time with Andrea Wickham, a very loud, but rather bad opera singer who has invited famous people to her home in order to record an album in support of her favourite charity. All of the celebrities make excuses, and only Sophie arrives. When she learns more about the charity, Sophie tries to make excuses too, but she cannot avoid having to sing a duet with Andrea. We hear them singing a tiny bit of The Teddy Bears' Picnic, a famous children's song from the 1930s.

Official Catch Up (2 parts) + Revolution

So a remix Revolution is released as a single in Italy. You can listen to the remix RIGHT HERE...

Here's the official Catch-up.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: www.sophieellisbextor.net

Hello Sophie, how are you?
I’m good thank you.

What are you up to?
I’m actually looking through a load of backing tracks. I’ve been sent some dance-y stuff over the last few weeks. So I’m going though them and seeing if there’s anything I want to work on.

So people just send you tracks out of the blue?
Yeah. It’s how I used to work years ago and then I stopped doing so much of that and started working in the studio with people. But then because I’d had quite a quiet January it’s been quite nice getting things sent over again. So I’ve just been pottering through them to see if there’s anything that grabs me and makes me want to write a chorus for it.

What’s usually the ratio of good stuff when you go through tracks like that?
It’s probably about 50/50, I would say. But some stuff you just get ideas for straight away, while other stuff I might like but realise it’s not quite right for me. So I would say there’s probably about 25% of it that I decide is worth working on. And the ones I’m actually disciplined enough to finish is probably about 5%.

Have you heard anything in this batch that you think could be good?
Yeah. There are two tracks which I’ve got on the go at the moment which I like.

What kind of thing?
Both quite dance-y. One is slightly Robyn-esque, I suppose. And the other one is a bit more anthemic, hands-in-the-air kind of thing.

And you receive them as instrumentals?
Yeah, that’s right.

Do they have any control over what words you choose to put on there?
Well, it will usually go back and forth a bit. That’s why working in a studio with people is much easier, because you thrash that out at the time. But I sometimes find that if I work with people I haven’t got a long working relationship with I can feel quite self-conscious trying to come up with stuff in the moment. So it can be easier to do it at home on your own. That’s actually the way that Groovejet started.

Ah, really?
Yes, that one was an instrumental that they sent to me. I used to work like that a lot. With Groovejet I went into a studio and just recorded what I’d done, which was verses, a chorus and a middle eight. I didn’t realise they’d been sending the same track to lots of people, but then they came back to me and said they liked my verses and my middle eight, but asked if I could use a Rob Davis chorus. And I was a bit confused, because I was quite earnest and this was actually the first song I’d ever written that was released. I was like, well, it doesn’t really make sense now, because the chorus and verse are talking about different things, so I had to rewrite it.

What was your original chorus then?
Well, Rob’s chorus was much more straight to the point and had a really great hook with a really good lyric. I think mine was a little bit more complicated. His was far and away better than mine! Mine was not so much a chorus with a capital C.

Do those old demo versions exist?
Probably somewhere. I haven’t really chucked much out, but I’ve got boxes and boxes of CDs, and I’m not exactly sure where it would be. I’ve still got the old demo cassettes from theaudience! I’m not sure whether I’ll ever come to actually sit down and go through them all. There’s always so many other things to be doing. I thought I’d get so much done in the first three months of the year before this baby comes, but actually I find if I’m not working then I want to be spending time with the kids. So yesterday I went to the Natural History Museum with Kit.

How was that?
It was actually really sweet. I hadn’t ever taken him there before and his big brother was at school, so we went on the tube and went to a cafe before the museum and then went around the dinosaurs. It was really nice to have that one on one time. It was a lovely day.

How was your Christmas?
Really, really lovely. I had it as a bit of a beacon before me because December was a bit full-on. I even had the offer of a gig that came in, which would’ve meant two flights there and two flights back and getting home on December 23rd. My manager phoned me and told me he wouldn’t let me do it because they were worried they might kill me! Which was good, as it meant I had Christmas week to get ready. We had 12 of us here for Christmas and it all went really well.

Apart from not receiving your full supermarket order, which you tweeted about.
Mmm. I thought that was really pathetic. I’d actually booked it for the 22nd so that I had a day to go and buy whatever they didn’t bring, in case there were any things missing. But there was just so much missing! There were no sausages, there were no carrots and there was no butter. Stuff like that. And I’d ordered it ages beforehand! I know there are bigger problems in the world, but it was rubbish.

Did the supermarket in question respond to you on Twitter?
Yeah, they did. They said if I DM’d my order number to them they’d try and sort it out for me. But I didn’t want special treatment. I didn’t think that was very fair. They should know what was in demand.

But your Christmas was all good in the end?
It really was. I think I was the most chilled out I’ve ever been doing it at home, because it was the least amount of people. My mum had bought pre-peeled potatoes from the online supermarket she uses. Oh my God! What a treat!

Did you get any nice presents?
I got really great presents. Now that I’m a grown-up I sort of forget that I’m going to get presents at Christmas too. So I think everything you get as an adult is more touching in a way. Richard did very nice presents - I’ve got flowers every other Friday for the whole year. And I got a massive jar of chip shop gherkins, because I love those. So I’m happy.

And then on New Year’s Eve you went off to Phuket with Richard. How was that?
It was pretty lush actually. We were booked for a full live show, so the band came too, which was great. We had three days in the sunshine eating Thai food and being on the beach. I’d never had a warm New Year’s Eve before, and I definitely get it now. I’ve always been a one family holiday a year in the summertime sort of person. But now I’m seeing the appeal of a winter break.

How was New Year’s Eve itself?
Well, it was a private party - held by Russians - and they did celebrations and fireworks at midnight Thai time and then more at midnight Russian time, which was 3am. There were loads of performers - Kelly Rowland was there, who’s always very lovely - and there were dancers and circus performers and all sorts. And the weather was lovely, which sounds obvious, but actually there were question marks that it might be stormy. It rained pretty much continuously the next evening, in fact.

You said on Twitter recently that you were struggling to find maternity wear.
Yeah, I just think a lot of it assumes that because you’re pregnant you don’t want to look fashionable or attractive - that you just want comfort and stretch and that’s about it. I think it’s a bit of an omission really. I don’t really understand why it’s not done better.

Have you ever been offered a clothes range or anything?
Well, it is something that I’ve been thinking about for maternity. A girlfriend of mine - who’s also having her third baby - is a stylist and we were thinking we should maybe look into it. Even if it’s just a very small range of really nice things which you could wear while you’re pregnant and then also for the first few months after you’ve had the baby. Some of your features you still want to show off. Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean everything has to be a smock on top and down to your ankles. I quite like the 60s look where you have it A-line but still more tailored around the top. That’s quite cute. But I’ll do some research and see what comes out of it.

Revolution is Bex-tastic!

(Revolution live at Meribel, 2011)

Revolution is amazing live. The live version is so much better than the recent studio leak. I've always wondered how You Get Yours will sound live. That song has so much energy, she should perform that song at least once.

I think she is singing "army" or "arm me" and not "own me". Banhurt and Paul pointed that out. Even her marching actions seem like she is singing "army"
(thanks to Paul for the heads-up)

Starlight and Revolution leak

Unfortunately, two songs from Sophie's upcoming album, Make A Scene, have leaked. PopJusitce listeners were treated to both songs yesterday, and they sound utterly gorgeous.

Starlight is like an 80's classic - its lush and melancholic. It acts like a beautiful connector between Bittersweet and Not Giving Up On Love. Sophie sounds slightly aloof, but the emotion is perfect. The production screams Richard X, which is a good thing. But after listening to it several times, i think it's a demo, and not the finished version. Or maybe the quality of the leak was just rubbish.

Revolution sounds like something from the 90's. Sophie's delivery is quite a surprise - although, it lacks the energy that the live version had. The lyrics are clever, and the self referencing bit just blows my mind; but the production seems a little flat. You'd expect grinding basslines and loud sharp noises, but the sound seems held-back. I'm not sure if that is done intentionally, but i'm guessing this too is an unfinished demo.

Here's hoping that the rest of the album sounds just as amazing as the song we have heard so far.

I'm going to copy-paste a few reviews from PopJustice. I'm not going to post a link to download/stream the song here. You will find the links on PopJustice (and maybe several other blogs by now)

dominic spez
Amazing.

dedeibm
Speechless.

Cedric
Oh my fucking God, "Starlight" is everything I wanted it to be. Amazing....And I'm loving the irony of the "We've been patient long enough" verse in "Revolution".

Nunya B
I think they're both fantastic just for the record. Revolution is fizzy ear candy.... Starlight has a middle eight which automatically makes it the better of the two, but I think they are both lovely. Not so far away from non-bosh Sophie after all, then.

D_ni
Revolution is sublime. Guess I know what I'll be listening to all next week (or year).

ChristopherP
I really like Starlight but Revolution is very meh as far as I'm concerned.

SpaceDog
Already obsessed with Starlight. It's just what I needed. Revolution is ok.

SophiaSophia
love them both but if anyone else gets hold of another track or the album keep it to yourself please.
Richard X and Sophie are sublime together I just wonder what Immune To Love sounded like. I hope it gets released one day even if it's by Richard X.
However I prefer the live version of Revolution only because the little synths after "wreck this club tonight" are clearer.

strictmachine79
Love them both, but live 'revolution' had a lot more going on, so maybe they are demos. Love them regardless.

Eel_Ssab
Oh my days, Starlight is everything I wanted and Revolution... well it's alright.

Effleurescence
My god I love these songs Revolution should be a single

Tommie
I liked Revolution until the cringeworthy Murder on the Dancefloor reference and then the non-existent chorus.
Starlight sounds nice

Rhombus
Starlight is very pleasant.

misfitmenace
starlight is beautiful but revolution is a bit flat, needs more modern, dynamic production

anfunny2003
Revolution is the better track, but both are underwhelming and pretty crap. She'll never have another hit single now. She's done now, if you ask me.

ssa
I don't want to talk.
I'm quite 'i don't know'

Banhurt
I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Makke
Hmm, I really hope those are demos, they sound quite flat. And when I compare them to the fullness of Bittersweet they really sound like demos. So maybe no need to be worried.
Revolution sounds nice, though I'd love the final version to be a bit more bass-filled and.. well, amplified?

Batmobile
"Starlight" is gorgeous! I feel like swaying about in a cropped shirt.

xondus
Starlight is good, but could do with some beefing up. Quality obviously isn't very high either. Some soaring strings on the last chorus would do it good, but as it is it's pretty much as I expected.
Revolution sounds like a demo - the production is quite dated and not in a good way. Chorus is really really flat. I liked it a lot in better in live form. Hopefully it's an early unfinished version.

yearscomeandgo
'Revolution' doesn't really do anything for me, especially the breakdown, which I find just sort of lacking. It's just... there. There's no sparkle to it at all. 'Starlight' is gorgeous as is, a throwback to the old higher BPM ballads but Spandau Ballet or OMD, but 'Revolution' just isn't anything special. It's certainly not single material, even weighted against the abyssmally dated 'Off & On.'
Not that any of us are concerned about singles. We're slightly deluded, but not high.

OneCharmingBastard
"Starlight" is as gorgeous as I wanted it to be - and should have been a big hit two years ago. "Revolution" is three minutes of catchy fun, and I love the self-reference :-)
This proves to me that I must be a huge fan - her demos even make my day!

FridayNight
I quite love it too. It's ridiculously campy and slightly bonkers. A tad bit like Sophia Loren in that respect I suppose.
Starlight is okay. It's not as striking as the stuff we ususlly get from Richard X though...

Carried into the Sun
I love both of these tracks! Starlight is much mellower and quite dark compared to the live performaces we've heard, but it's still very beautiful.
Revolution is just as fabulous as I expected it to be.. just so glitzy!!

MartianCowboy
*gasp* STARLIGHT! *dies*

MrStyles
Oh my... 'Starlight' is beautiful.
I too am a *little* put out with 'Revolution'. It does sound a bit demo-ish, especially compared to the beefy live version she did on the last tour.

koolfresh
"Starlight" is massive. That Richard X is a beautiful man.

DirtyPorn Star
I know Sophie is posh and always sounds uninterested, but damn she sounds like someone sucked all emotion of out her on the recording...It's not bad, it's just not that good. It's not something that one would wait 2-3 years for and I fear that's going to be my verdict of the album.

The Poop Master
It was incredibly boring, I have to say...

LovePOP
They're sooo good!

I had posted the lyrics to both the songs last december. Here they are, once again.

REVOLUTION
Bang bang! It's a hold up
You about to give it up
In the boot they're slippin' up
We've been patient long enough
It's a hold up
Rebels gonna play it tough
Wreck the deck and needle off
Shut it down and turn it off

Face to face
It's murder on the dance floor
Cut to the chase
Just give us what we came for

Get on the revolution
(Wreck this club tonight)

Own me, own me, own me, own me, own me, own me
(Wreck this club tonight)

Bang bang! In the club crowd
Better off or down and bow
Chaos holding - what a wow!
Tearing up the sound now
Ow! Shout it out loud
Now we're warming up the ground
Rip the deck and needle up
Shut it down and turn it off

Face to face
It's murder on the dancefloor
Cut to the chase
Just give us what we came for

STARLIGHT
Hold a moment in time
And look to the skies
And we are frozen in light
Not a second goes by

Is it a waking dream holding me?
You never really know till you know
In the blink of an eye
Hearts will unite

We are one
Find us under the starlight, starlight, starlight
I could die, right here in your arms
We are one
Ccaught here under the starlight, starlight, starlight
Oh! Cos tonight we found heaven in the dark

No silhouette in my mind
It's just you and I
And as the starlight shines
Bodies are blind

It's so natural, unbreakable
Won't ever let you go, let you go
Hand in my hand
Here till the end

We are one
Find us under the starlight, starlight, starlight
I could die, right here in your arms
We are one
Ccaught here under the starlight, starlight, starlight
Oh! Cos tonight we found heaven in the dark

As the new day rises
Lost in our embrace
We are one...

Official charting - Bittersweet

It's official, Bittersweet failed to perform well on the charts. Digital Spy and The Guardian gave the song 5 stars and BBC Radio 1 (curse those sods) gave it 3 stars. It was #1 on MTV Dance for weeks (it's still #1). PopJustice and several other websites gave the song favourable reviews. Sophie was on top of the PJ Almighty for several weeks (months even!). It's hard to believe that a song as good as this landed somewhere inside the top 40., and not in the top 10.

Bittersweet peaked at #25 on the UK Singles Chart, #14 on the UK Club Chart and #38 on the UK Downloads Chart. I hope it does well in Russia. By the way, Can't Fight This Feeling is #1 in Russia (thanks Fran). It's good to see that Sophie has a loyal fanbase there. Go Russian fans!

Sophie has plans for a second single - either Revolution or Off And On. The second single hits the radio sometime in July and the album will follow in August. Hopefully everything will go as planned and she'll have a decent top 10 hit with the next single.

Wishing the best for Sophie....

By the way, i'm back. I'm done with my exams (such a relief). So how have you been?

Bittersweet - The radio response

Okay, i don't know if we should be worried or not, but it seems like the radios aren't supporting her all over again. Someone on PopJustice said:

"If you look at the Compare My Radio website, it would seem
that the only radio station supporting Bittersweet has already dropped the song.
http://comparemyradio.com/tracks/Sophie_Ellis-Bextor/Bittersweet
Scroll down to track play history.
I hope Team Sophie have some sort of back-up plan
because if this album's campaign was supposed to ride on Bittersweet than it is
not looking very good."

Now i don't know how radio stations work there, but if requests are allowed, i hope you guys are requesting for the song. Some people say that Radio 1 and Radio 2 are the major stations who have wide audiences, and without their support, it is very difficult to sell a song. Sophie was lucky with Heartbreak, even though Radio 1 didn't support her, she managed to sell in millions, and chart on the higher side of the Top20. But at least Sophie had a whole lot of performances on TV, but so far, i've seen nothing.

A friend of mine told me that Bittersweet is getting played on TV, but it was played late in the night. I haven't seen the video on VH1 or MTV as yet. Again, i don't know if i should be worried, because the single isn't out before May, so there's plenty of time for it to catch on, but can we do something about it?

I'm trying to get the local stations here to playlist the song. Here we can actually head over to the website and request the music manager to playlist a song, and based on the reactions they will continue to play it. If such a policy exists there, i suggest you guys to start requesting..

What you can also do?
- Vote for Bittersweet on the MTV Dance chart - http://www.mtv.co.uk/channels/mtv-dance/chart
- Vote for Bittersweet in this Spanish newspaper - http://www.20minutos.es/musica/top
(you can vote any number of times on both)

Anyway, now that i have calmed down a little bit, i thought i would share a little something with everybody. I requested the guy who posted the snippet of Revolution to post Under Your Touch, and he did. So you can hear a snippet of that song now - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn3bkBuV58U ... it's pretty decent. But then again, i shouldn't be judging this from a clip. Anyway, he also sent me this, which has the intro to Revolution. It sounds amazing...

special thanks to KMGuy

more about Revolution

So, we know Revolution is a Kurstin/Denis/Ellis-Bextor track. But here's something from the lady herself:

"One of my favourite songs is Revolution. It's very energetic, short and hard-hitting and unlike anything I've done before. It name-checks Murder On The Dancefloor, which is extremely funny. It's clever but was not my idea."

Looking forward to this song.

Revolution - another song title.

Yay! JP (from the official forum) is back, and he posted this:
"The new album is going to be HUGE!!! There are so many strong tracks it is untrue!! Bittersweet is a surefire disco stomper....it will be massive! 'Revolution' has to be a single, I cannot write in words how much I love this track!! 2010 is going to be a big one!! JPx"
Revoltion was a title that Dave H (from the official forum, again) had mentioned a couple of months ago.
I just love how everyone says "Bittersweet will be massive". I just can't stop listening to the live recording on youtube. *fingers crossed that the rest of the album is as good as that*
