Digital Spy caught up with Sophie

Don't you just love it when you read a good interview? Thank you DigitalSpy for this.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/interviews/a324829/sophie-ellis-bextor-interview-im-a-sucker-for-sad-pop.html

The last time we spoke to Sophie Ellis-Bextor, she was on the cusp of releasing her fourth studio album Make A Scene. Fast-forward more than a year and, well, she's finally got around to putting out the record. Before we all accuse her of being a lady of too much leisure, the last 12 months have seen her part ways with her record label and set up her own, as well as putting out a pair of successful chart hits across Europe. Intrigued, we phoned Mademoiselle E-B herself to find out how it's all going.

Your new album was delayed for almost a year. How does it feel to finally get it out?
"It feels really good thanks! I'm actually very happy with what we've achieved behind the scenes with establishing the new label and getting such a fantastic team around me. I know to the outside world it seems like this record has taken forever, but from leaving Universal to bringing out the album independently has actually been quite a quick process."

Things seemed to go quiet last year after the release of 'Bittersweet'. What happened?
"Peter Lorraine, who was the head of the sub-label I was on called Fascination, decided to leave and go into management instead. He's a lovely guy, and we're still close, but he was the reason I was with that label, so instead of negotiating a new deal with Universal I thought I'd go it alone."

Did you have to buy the album back from the label?
"No they just gave me the album, which was great, because we'd already made a music video and shot the artwork for it. They were really good about it - the whole thing was very smooth and easy."

Did you ever worry that your music career was over?
"I was excited more than anything else! I'd been talking about the idea of releasing independently with my manager a few years before anyway. I could have signed a deal with a different label, but I was keen to try doing it by myself first. One day I might want to return to that world, but at the moment I can't see myself going back to that structure."

Does releasing music independently put the pressure on?
"I'd say it takes the pressure off - you don't need to sell as many records for the project to be deemed a success, and there are no worries about how much of a priority you are to your label. It also means I can release EPs instead of albums if I want to, which is something I'm considering."

You co-wrote most of the album; was that important to you?
"I don't think writing or co-writing my songs makes me a better singer, but I haven't really got an excuse not to do it as I've got too many opinions! For example I wrote my new single 'Starlight' with Richard X and a girl called Hannah, and the process usually starts with Richard setting up a drum loop, then we add some chords over it, then we put the lyrics to the melody. I think Richard X did a great job with it. I'm a sucker for sad disco pop."

How would you describe the sound of the rest of the LP?
"It's very dancey, very electro, disco, and very confident. I feel like I enjoyed making this record more than any other. Hopefully people find it quite uplifting too. 'Starlight' is a favourite of mine and I love the title track 'Make A Scene' - it's a bit bonkers! I made it with Metronomy and I loved their approach to producing."

Will there be any more singles from the album?
"I'd like to release 'Off & On' next. I think it's about time I got on with it - it's the song that I keep putting back but really want to release."

You've had a lot of success in Russia; was that planned?
"It sort just happened. I started playing the odd gig and kept getting called back more and more and the events got bigger. It was great because it felt like the hard work paid off. I've had a couple of top three hits there now and the album performed well, which is fantastic."

We've heard some of the Russian corporate gigs can be, erm, interesting...
"I know what you're talking about, but I've always made sure to form friendships with whoever I'm working with. I've never experienced anything that's made me uncomfortable, but I have heard stories. You have to keep your wits about you!"

You feature on The Feeling's new album with Roisin Murphy, who also wrote 'Off & On' for your album. Would you ever collaborate with her?
"That's weird connection, isn't it!? When I recorded 'Off & On' I hadn't ever met her, but I really get on with her now and she's the perfect fit for the Feeling track. The Freemasons also worked on that particular song, and they're an act I'd collaborate with any time they wanted me! I love their approach to dance while still remaining sensitive to pop music."

We hear you've started work on your next album; how's it going?
"I've actually gone completely the opposite way to Make A Scene. It's a lot more live-sounding, with drum kits and real instruments. I'm not sure if I'll continue with it, but that's where I wanted to start - I wanted go outside my comfort zone. Dance music is great, but it's not a time to be reflective or particularly wistful. Lyrically I can do some different stuff too - there's more to life than dancing in the clubs!"

Digital Spy writes about Sophie

I love how people at Digital Spy are big fans of Sophie. Even when there's absolutely nothing to write about, they post ten well known facts about the lady. Awww!

Here's the original article:

Remember when Sophie Ellis-Bextor first promised us her fourth solo album was just around the corner? Yep, that was an awful long time ago! Well, at last there are some signs that she's finally getting it all together. So, as we shimmy along to latest trailer 'Not Giving Up On Love' and gee ourselves up for her tour of England's forests, we thought there was no better time to serve up ten triviatastic facts about one of the most effortlessly stylish women in music.

1. Sophie Michelle Ellis-Bextor was born on April 10, 1979 to tv/film director dad Robin Bextor and former Blue Peter presenter mum Janet.

2. Soph actually appeared on Blue Peter a couple of times as a child. "Once to model a snood, and another time to model a dress made out of dustbin liners, with little yellow bows on it," she revealed. Always a trendsetter! We fully expect the Arsenal XI to sport those dustbin liners when next year's snood ban comes into place!

Digital Spy on Not Giving Up

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has premiered her new single 'Not Giving Up' by performing a live acoustic version of the track.

The 'Bittersweet' singer recently told Digital Spy she had switched her single plans to release the song instead of a track called 'Off & On'.

Ellis-Bextor performed an acoustic version of the Armin Van Buuren collaboration yesterday on Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show.

Lyrics of the chorus include: "I know we're strong enough/ I'm not giving up/ I'm not giving up on us/ I said I'm not giving up/ I'm not giving up on love".

The singer also confirmed that her upcoming fourth studio album Straight To The Heart will be released in autumn.

Ellis-Bextor recently admitted that she was unsure over which song she was releasing next, claiming label bosses are also keen to release her collaboration

with Junior Caldera, called 'Can't Fight This Feeling'.

It is rumoured that the promo clip for 'Not Giving Up' will be shot in Ibiza.

Official charting - Bittersweet

It's official, Bittersweet failed to perform well on the charts. Digital Spy and The Guardian gave the song 5 stars and BBC Radio 1 (curse those sods) gave it 3 stars. It was #1 on MTV Dance for weeks (it's still #1). PopJustice and several other websites gave the song favourable reviews. Sophie was on top of the PJ Almighty for several weeks (months even!). It's hard to believe that a song as good as this landed somewhere inside the top 40., and not in the top 10.

Bittersweet peaked at #25 on the UK Singles Chart, #14 on the UK Club Chart and #38 on the UK Downloads Chart. I hope it does well in Russia. By the way, Can't Fight This Feeling is #1 in Russia (thanks Fran). It's good to see that Sophie has a loyal fanbase there. Go Russian fans!

Sophie has plans for a second single - either Revolution or Off And On. The second single hits the radio sometime in July and the album will follow in August. Hopefully everything will go as planned and she'll have a decent top 10 hit with the next single.

Wishing the best for Sophie....

By the way, i'm back. I'm done with my exams (such a relief). So how have you been?

Digital Spy's review (5 stars!!) + Sophie's internet hate + collaboration with Roger Sanchez

I know i hadn't posted about "Sophie's internet hate", even though it's all over the internet already. I was just waiting for readers and casual onlookers to discover the new leak "Did I?"

If you haven't already heard the song, please check the previous post. You're missing out on one hell of an amazing song. Sophierazzi salutes Sophie for that marvellous track. It's the perfect example for a short and sweet track.

Anyway, Nick Levine from Digital Spy gave Sophie's new single 5 stars, and he also gave an early review. I hope Sophie gets a lot of good reviews like this.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE - http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/singlesreviews/a216517/sophie-ellis-bextor-bittersweet.html
Last year's 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' was a bona fide dancefloor delight,
so it's little wonder that Sophie Ellis-Bextor - perhaps our most under-appreciated pop princess - has teamed up with the Freemasons again for the first single from her upcoming fourth album. However, 'Bittersweet' is no twin sister to 'Heartbreak' - more a close-ish cousin you wouldn't mind sharing a frappucino with on a sunny Spring afternoon.

In only slightly more sensible terms, it's a big spangly club thumper with a pleasing hint of the '80s to it - the pop equivalent of that surprisingly elegant sequinned boob tube at the back of your mum's wardrobe. "I know I shouldn't go, but something makes me crave the heat," Soph sings on the wistful/uplifting chorus, "Your love is bittersweet, so here I am." You know that feeling when you're falling for someone you know you shouldn't - sort of excited and hesitant all at the same
time? Well, 'Bittersweet' pretty much nails it.
And, the news about Sophie's internet hate. I don't know why it got branded as "hate". I'm sure she doesn't "hate" the internet. She doesn't like to google up herself, which is contradictory to what she had told previously (she loved to google up "I hate Sophie Ellis-Bextor". Then again that could have just been a sarcastic comment. Oh well)

ORIGINAL ARTICLE - http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/sophie-ellisbextors-internet-hate_1140203

Sophie Ellis-Bextor will never look herself up on the internet because she is worried about reading negative criticism of herself.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor won't Google herself.

The 'Bittersweet' singer admits she is curious about searching for herself on the internet but refuses to give in to her urge because she doesn't want to read anything negative.

She said: "As for forums and people dissecting stuff, I don't know. Those things can be kind of... It's not intended for me to view. So I think it would be unwise of me to look. People might be really positive but all you can remember is all the negative stuff. I try and steer clear on the whole."

"You know what it's like? You know when you're at school and you leave the room and you get the idea people are talking about you and you kind of want to know what they're saying. But it's best you don't."

The 31-year-old pop star - who has two children, Sonny, five, and 14-month-old Kit Valentine, with The Feeling guitarist Richard Jones - thinks the web is bad for musicians because you can see criticisms instantly.

She explained to BANG Showbiz: "The internet has made everyone so self-centred. I don't think it's good for my head. You can check your Facebook and if you put a video on YouTube you can check that. And then you can check where your name is being discussed. It's not good to be so aware of all those things."

Sophie's new single 'Bittersweet' is released May 3.
AND, we couldn't tape the MTV show, but Sophie revealed on MTV Dance that she worked with Roger Sanchez on his new album. Keep your eyes peeled Sophiedroids. This year is going to be a fabulous year for Sophie *excited*

Digital Spy update about the 4th album

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has revealed the tracklisting for her upcoming album. Straight To The Heart, due for release in July, will feature 12 tracks including the singer's Freemasons collaboration, 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)', and her new single 'Bittersweet'.

In an interview with Gay Times, Ellis-Bextor confirmed that songwriters and producers who have worked on the album include Calvin Harris, Richard X, Hannah Robinson, Cathy Dennis, Greg Kurstin, Ed Harcourt and Joe Mount.

She also revealed that one track, 'Dial My Number', was inspired by a "text stalker" she has, while another, 'Homewrecker', is about "girls who flirt with your boyfriend right under your nose, which is very annoying".

Ellis-Bextor, 31, has released three previous studio albums since launching her solo career in 2000, notching up seven top ten hits with tracks including 'Groovejet (If This Is Love)', 'Murder On The Dancefloor' and 'Catch You'.

BLOODY HELL THE ARMIN TRACK IS MISSING. After all that hype. There better be an explanation for this, and that better have "UK BONUS TRACK" written all over it.

EDIT - Sophie tweeted saying "armin track is on the album x"... sorry for all that drama folks. I was really looking forward to hearing that song. And he's the world's #1 DJ. That's some goodwill that Sophie can cash on, in my opinion.

Digital Spy Interview + Album Chart Show + confirmed tracklist

This is a no nonsense post. Enjoy.

DIGITAL SPY INTERVIEW
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/interviews/a214312/sophie-ellis-bextor.html
Following last year's summer smash with the Freemasons, 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)', Sophie Ellis-Bextor has proved that lightning can indeed strike twice by teaming up with the dance duo again from her cracking newbie 'Bittersweet'. In the middle of a promo tour for the single - and mere minutes before she was due on live telly - we managed to grab a quick chat with Mademoiselle E-B herself.

What's the response to the new single been like?
"Good, it all seems positive so far. I probably shouldn't say this but I think it sounds really good on the radio! I'm happy with how it's all shaping up."

What sort of chart position are you hoping for?
"God, I honestly haven't given it that much thought. I think whatever position means that the next single gets support and the album does OK. I think the more important thing is that it hangs around - a bit of longevity would be good, please!"

Have you decided what the next single's going to be?
"It's going to be 'Off And On', the track penned by Calvin Harris and Cathy Dennis."

You posted 'Off And On' on your MySpace page a while ago - are you worried that will affect sales?
"Nah, I don't think that's how things work anyway. I put 'Heartbreak' up a while before I released that too. Lily Allen put 'The Fear' up on her MySpace about a year before it came out and it still did really well. It's a new mix of the song too."

Any ideas on what the video will be like?
"Well, ages ago there was talk about 'Off And On' being the first single and I was approached by [director] Sophie Muller and she had some really good ideas for the video. I think it was something to do with having a fairground on my face! Hopefully we can revisit that idea because it sounds intriguing! I'd be foolish not to see what that's all about, wouldn't I?"

Is the album ready to go now?
"Yes, there's one song that needs a final tweek, and then we'll master it and sort out a running order, and then we're done. I think the next single will be out the last week of July and the album will be out the following week. Knowing me, that could all change, but that's what I've been told!"

There's an especially dancey song on your album called 'Revolution' - what's the story behind it?
"Well, I wrote it with Greg Kurstin and Cathy Dennis and it was actually the quickest song to write on my whole album. We started work at midday and Cathy had to leave by 4pm, and we even had time for some lunch outside in the garden, so it was probably about three hours' work. I think it sounds great - really fresh and quite heavy. The best bit is that it refers to 'Murder On The Dancefloor'."

Was the reference to 'Murder On The Dancefloor' intentional?
"Yes, very much so! It wasn't my idea - I think I'm too British to think of something like that - but Cathy suggested it and I really liked the idea. I think it's great if you've been around a while to reference yourself."

Do you think it will be a single in the future?
"I think so, maybe after 'Off And On'? The third single will either be 'Revolution' or a track called 'Starlight', which was produced by Richard X. I think that's quite a pretty song. I like all the songs on the album though, so I don't really mind what's a single."

What's your favourite track on the album?
"I like all the ones we've been talking about, but there's another song I did with Richard X called 'Magic' which I really like. I always know a song is a favourite when I start imagining myself on galloping horses - that often means I'm onto a winner! There's also a song called 'Dial My Number' which has a great electro vibe."

Would describe it as a dance album?
"Very much so - more so than any of my other albums. What I'm planning next though is an album that's really different. I think I need to do something different now and move on from the dance stuff. I might come back to it, but I think this album is a good way to bow out of the dance sound for now. I think it's finishing on a high."

Any ideas of what sound you might take on next?
"Yes, but I won't say just in case I change my mind! It's still couple of years away, but I still like thinking about these things now."

RANDOM:
She's done a duet with The Feeling on their upcoming album. It's called "Leave Me Out Of It". Oh and there's a bit of French on Under Your Touch. And the vocoder on Under Your Touch makes it sound like a Pet Shop Boys track - very good!

Here's what i hear, if anyone wants the lyrics:

UNDER YOUR TOUCH

Come, the night is waiting
I want to waste it on you
Voulez Vous?

Come, this invitation
Is only open to you
What you got to lose?

If i could be under your touch
Nothing would take me away
Cos i've been dreaming you up
Again and again

Baby i'm so ready for love
I'm so ready for love
Want to be under your touch
(Want to be under your touch)

You, you got me thinking
I'll break tradition for you
And make a move

Yeah you, my neon vision
My sole ambition to love
Let's make it true

If i could be under your touch
Nothing would take me away
Cos i've been dreaming you up
Again and again

Baby i'm so ready for love
I'm so ready for love
Want to be under your touch
(Want to be under your touch)

The way you've made me fall
It isn't logical
I had a craze and now all i want is you

So don't look and see
Come put your hands on me
On and on, nobody else will do

If i could be under your touch
Nothing would take me away
Cos i've been dreaming you up
Again and again

Baby i'm so ready for love
I'm so ready for love
Want to be under your touch

(thanks to Paul for this)
Interview on The Hits Radio with Sophie - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RRU3WPB9

There's a slightly bigger picture of the artwork on PopJustice, thank you Mr. PJ for posting it. But i still wonder why it's so wide...

Mr. PJ's thoughts about the artwork:
Here is some Sophie Ellis-Bextor artwork.
It's BLACK AND WHITE but it's also COLOUR meaning that it is at once CLASSIC and CONTEMPORARY.
We do like the fact that 'Sophie' and 'Ellis-Bextor' are separated - it's a
separation that immediately changes the emphasis on her surname from Bextor to
Ellis. This is precisely the sort of career redefining attention to detail that
will help Soph(THAT'S ENOUGH OF THAT THANKS - ED)

AND... the moment that i have been waiting for since 5 years (at the very least) - Sophie might be branching out into Fashion!!!
Sophie Ellis-Bextor has revealed that she would like to branch out into
fashion.
The Digital Spy website reports that the singer said to The People
that she would particularly like to design her own range of footwear.
Ellis-Bextor is quoted as saying: "I would definitely do shoes. I'm
obsessed with them and have more than 200 pairs."

She went on to say that she would like to work with a high-street store, saying:
"I love Topshop. That's the sort of thing I'd like to do."

Digital Spy gave Sophie a really good review

The new Sophie Ellis-Bextor single landed in our inbox this morning and since then, according to iTunes play count, we've listened to it precisely 16 times. We always pick pleasure over pain, so you can take that as a testament to the track's quality.

It's called 'Bittersweet' and it's a co-production between Biff Stannard, who previously worked with Soph on 'New York City Lights', and the Freemasons, with whom she hooked up last year for 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)'. The latter's the Bextor track with which 'Bittersweet' shares the most DNA, though the pair are more second cousins who see each other at Christmas and significant family birthdays than brother and sister.

Right, time for the nitty-gritty. 'Bittersweet' is a big spangly club banger with a pleasing whiff of the '80s to it and a chorus that's both uplifting and wistful. "I know I shouldn't go but something makes me crave the heat, your love is bittersweet," she sings on that chorus, "The fire in your touch I always find so hard to beat, your love is bittersweet..." After both "bittersweets" there are extra snippets of Sophie vocal buried just beneath the surface of the mix - "woah-woah-woah, so here I am" - and each one is three seconds of pure pop loveliness.

Time for a final thought? Oh go on then. Well, this is a cracking comeback single from an artist we've long been a fan of here at DS and always enjoy pestering at awards shows. It's not out until May, and God (scratch that), GaGa knows what's going to happen between now and then, but, if you ask us, Mademoiselle E-B's given herself every chance of bagging an eighth top ten hit with this one.

More about the album

"Your love's bittersweet bittersweet oh-uh-ooh"
Seems like we're going to get an amazing hook for the song! kmitalian from PopJustice generously donated a recording of the Freemasons mix of Bittersweet. (You will find the youtube link in my previous post)

And a couple of hours ago, Digital Spy posted an inerview with Sophie on their website:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a204793/ellis-bextor-reveals-new-album-title.html
Thank you DS for asking the right questions, something that the official website should have done. Anyway.

Highlights of the interview:
1. The video will be shot next week, in London with Chris Sweeny is the producer again. Sophie has the concept of the video, but she won't disclose anything right away.
2. Sophie's quote on Bittersweet - "It's another song I did with the Freemasons. It's very pop-dance. I think the chorus sounds a little bit like it's from a musical - it's quite sort of dramatic and melodic, and a bit meandering in a good way."
3. The strategy might be 2 singles and the album sometime in Autumn. The album is called Make A Scene - being comfortable with your own skin. There may be 12 tracks, sequencing yet to be done.
4. Confirmed producers so far - Metronomy, Armin Van Buuren, Sneaker Pimps, Richard X, Calvin Harris and Freemasons confirmed till now.

Richard X - Starlight (or Magic, but that was recorded during the GH sessions, so i doubt it)
Metronomy - Scene
Freemasons - Bittersweet and Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)
Calvin Harris - Off & On (I'm not too sure if Calling It Love will be on the album)
Sneaker Pimps - Dial My Number (it has to be this, the Stalker song)
Armin Van Buuren - Not Giving Up On Love

So.. that is, roughly, 7 songs

I know Dimitri is going to be on the album. (I hope its "Sleepwalking". That title is just awesome!). I also hope Jim Elliott's track makes it (Whispers On The Street).
